I’d like to see an end to all unprovoked online attacks on any of us, but this is an informal continuation of thought from this post, about certain female celebrities and the varying degrees of public scorn they’ve recently received. Having said that, I’d like to take a step back and urge you to question why you or anyone would take to the internet to insult a celebrity to begin with. There are true internet trolls who crave a sort of sick attention, but there are also a number of otherwise psychologically sound people who still see fit to use their social media pages to call certain…

White supremacy structures how the news media frames and reports events in the United States (and elsewhere). There are so many examples of this reality that the difficulty is not one of finding them, rather, the challenge involves which examples of white racial framing to discuss and detail.Saturday's riot by white college students at Keene State College's annual Pumpkinfest is a priceless example of white privilege and white racism as a type of social practice and habit. It was high comedy. But the health and political systems in that region were already under attack from another deadly force -- drug trafficking and the harsh criminal response so frequently wielded in the global war on drugs. What makes it so hard to combat the spread of Ebola in West Africa -- weak public infrastructure, porous borders and high poverty rates -- are some of the same factors that drew the narco-traffickers. West Africa’s public infrastructure is now collapsing under the burden of the Ebola outbreak. And the impulse to focus on law enforcement over medical treatment in these crises can be equally…

By now you’ve probably heard Missy Elliott’s “Lose Control,” in fact you may recognize the keyboard sweep and electro pulse that form the foundation of the track. Issued in 1983 on Fantasy; “Clear” by Cybotron has rightly maintained “classic” status. Juan Atkins split from his partner in Cybotron and continued as Model 500 (and others) on his own Metroplex Imprint, which released another classic “No UFO’s.” This track along with others from Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson would create the blueprint for modern techno and change the sound of music around the world.

"The Boys of Baraka" is a documentary about a group of poor, black kids from Baltimore city who are selected to attend a boarding school in rural Kenya. It begins with a grim statistic: "In Baltimore, Maryland 76% of African-American boys do not graduate from high school." I couldn't help but detect a certain amount of opportunism on the part of the filmmakers. Directors Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady appear to be sensitive enough to be able to grasp the overarching issues (i.e. education, family, racism and poverty), but this is still just a documentary for them. If one logs onto the official…

The Bloods referred ABC to me and Puddin, who was my elder, presented me because he wanted me to speak for them," says Cle Sloan. "They felt that I could articulate in a way that blacks and whites could understand." And that may, in fact, be how this lifetime member of the Los Angeles Bloods found his voice. However, it is no where near the beginning of this story.Still, it may be helpful to start with Cle Sloan, the documentarian who created and developed "Bastards of the Party," since…

Our first video of the month is the classic Buck and the Preacher, starring Sydney Poitier, Harry Belafonte and Ruby Dee. In this movie alone, we see the power and ability of Sydney Poitier as an actor; never mind the fact that he directed the movie too. Hollywood’s recognition of Poitier this year at the Oscars was long overdue, and if Hollywood were about anything remotely real, this picture would have swept the Oscars back in the day.Released in 1971, Buck and the Preacher is a natural for video pick of the month. It set a new standard for what a movie can be, do and make you feel.

I can't tell you how I have decided to move on. I just do. I can't put into clarifying words how I picked myself up over and over and over again. I can't begin to explain how I stopped my self from suicide. Wretched myself back from crippling despair. Oh, I live knowing deeply that I benefit from undeserved grace.I could lay before the world my life... filled with all kinds of twists and turns. Great highs and gutter lows. Crippling defeats and humiliating moments that seemed to last an eternity. I've known unimaginable pleasure in the arms of men I couldn't pick out of a line-up tomorrow.

I thought once I started a family I would be happy.  I thought once I earned all these degrees I would be happy. I thought once I got out of prison and all this was behind me I would be happy.I have come to painfully realize that happiness is not predicated on having shit. Happiness is a state of being that you decide upon right now. Not when shit goes right. You gotta be happy when shit goes wrong. And therein lies the gift. To stand in the state of grace and joy even as the ground beneath…

Halloween is the one time of year when kids are allowed to devour as much candy as their stomachs can handle. When I was a kid growing up in an urban area of New Jersey, there weren’t too many times we were allowed to go trick-or-treating—mainly because of religious reasons. But on the rare occasion when we were allowed to indulge in the “devil’s holiday,” as my grandmother often referred to it, she took us to richer neighborhoods to trick-or-treat.

    Julianne Hing
    24 Oct 2014 | 9:40 am
As leaks trickle out of Ferguson, Attorney General Eric Holder has warned the Justice Department that the "selective flow of information" being released to the public is "inappropriate and troubling," the Washington Post reports.  Last week it was Darren Wilson's version of events, first published by the New York Times. This week, a decontextualized autopsy. Both seem to bolster a case in favor of Wilson, who killed 18-year-old Michael Brown on August 9.  Criminal justice experts have speculated that the leaks may be a strategic attempt to head off the inevitable outrage should a grand jury…

Earlier this week we learned that some teammates don’t think Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson is “Black enough.” Sigh. Not this again. This not”Black enough” couldn’t really be explained or dissected because no one can really say what it means exactly. Well wait, Freeman did write, “Well-spoken blacks are seen by some other blacks as not completely black. Some of this is at play.” Oh ok. That settles it. Wilson is not “Black enough.” Side eye. Wilson grew up in Virginia in what seems to be a pretty solid middle class life.

  • The American Military and Afrocentricity

    Asad Malik
    22 Oct 2014 | 7:28 am
    - By Trey Lipscomb Afrocentricity involves “placing African ideals at the center of any analysis that involves African culture and behavior.” Using the Afrocentric Method, this essay examines the blacks involvement in American armed service. To the African American, war did not mean the same as it did to the American Caucasian. The African American fought in wars that he would not have been so inclined to do if he had not been in the condition in which he existed. To be more descriptive, if the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade had not occurred it is unlikely that African people would be…

By Raymond Gilpin The speed with which the current Ebola epidemic swept across parts of West Africa, claiming over 3,000 lives in the first six months and affecting millions more, exposed the extreme fragility of primary health care facilities in the region, the disproportionate impact on particularly vulnerable groups, as well as the increasingly globalized implications of the outbreak. Almost overnight, the ‘Africa Rising’ narrative from the August 2014 US-Africa Leaders’ Summit was replaced with the more familiar refrain of ‘death, destruction and disease.’…

Today, the Washington Post has a story that highlights the legalized theft of civilian property which lets cops make money from seizing cash and property from alleged criminals. From Business Insider: The Justice Department’s Equitable Sharing Program allows local police departments to keep 80% of the stuff seized during drug raids and other investigations.
