"What Would You Do?" is great television. It merges the classic TV show "Candid Camera" with social science-like experiments and a clear moral lens which offers the viewer the "good guy's" perspective: thus, breaking the proverbial 4th wall and providing an ethical Deus Ex Machina moment. What Would You Do? is so very smart in how it creates complicity with the viewer through scenarios that are very much a black and white, cut and dry, right and wrong binary choice, where no "decent" person would side with the obvious wrongs depicted on screen. What Would You Do? is especially powerful,…

It’s delicious irony that Hobby Lobby’s 401(k) plan invests in pharmaceutical companies that provide contraception, while it’s been making headlines, and history, over the past year because it doesn’t want to give its employees access to health care plans that offer birth control. Notwithstanding, some say that this isn’t as devastating a tale of hypocrisy as people think. Forbes’ Ryan Ellis argues that, because 401(k) plans are only indirectly supported by employers, and the mutual funds therein are actually chosen by employees and plan administrators, Hobby Lobby is too…

Despite their numerous gaffes over the course of the last year, the journalists and pundits of CNN usually do a decent job of getting their facts straight. Unless, of course, those facts include telling you who to blame whenever something goes wrong. For example, daytime talk show host Dr. Oz hosted CNN’s chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta last Wednesday for a discussion about the recent FDA approval of a new and potentially dangerous prescription drug called Zohydro. An opioid derivative similar to OxyContin but significantly more powerful, Zohydro was approved by the FDA…

There was a time when being called a friend was the greatest title you could bestow on another. Friendship was not given but rather earned. It grew over time and blossomed from love and trust. But in today's world this title can be bestowed by clicking the ?Add Friend? tab on any social networking site. We are also influenced by the space and time in which we emerge, a variable within our own equations. But what does this really mean? We know that we carry the DNA of past people, and will inform the DNA of future people, but the tangible links between us and them are sometimes lost in translation: literally. Of course these links don't have to be lost; not if we do a little "digging up of the past"—as Arthur Schomburg implored us…

We recently got the opportunity to sit down and chat with Grammy award-winning producer 9th Wonder. The conversation was enlightening to say the least. We all know that 9th is a genius when it comes to production, but this conversation provides an in-depth look at his ideas on the preservation of hip-hop, Black Nationalism and his opinion on “the best rapper” in the game.Liberator Magazine: We know about your music, so I’m just going to ask you a few basic questions and then we’re going to move onto some more important topics.9th Wonder: OK, cool. Liberator: Who do you prefer to work…

“Poets like Larry Neal and Askia Toure were, in my mind, masters of the new black poetry...Askia had the song-like cast to his words, as if the poetry actually was meant to be sung. I heard him once up at the Baby Grand when we first got into Harlem and that singing sound influenced what I was to do with poetry from then on.”-Amiri Baraka “The Autobiography of LeRoi Jones/Amiri Baraka”Whether or not you’ve heard of him makes no difference. Another week, another solid episode of Arrow.  I’m actually starting to get sad because I know there are only 4 more episodes left.  And the creative team behind this show is really bringing it home.  There are a lot of little subplots going on in this episode and I know that they’re all going to play a major role as we approach the season finale. “Don’t Forget Who Taught You How to Fight Kid” Slade Wilson clearly still has the upper hand on Oliver and his team but it was nice to see them take the fight back to Slade this episode.  Blowing up the Applied Science Lab at Queen…

So, yet another “reality television star” decides to release a hard core pornographic video on the internet and the flurry of commentary begins. I don’t desire to promote this “lady” nor do I care about her motivations. She is a “seasoned” woman and can live with the consequences of her decisions. I’m sure her next stop on the fame-train will be an appearance on some confessional like “reality” program where she’ll cry and talk about her terrible mistake, how bad she feels -  blah, blah, blah. What worries me the most - is this woman’s young daughter and all other…

  • My Lenten Journey: I Will Stop Living My Lesser Story

    13 Apr 2014 | 8:25 am
I have been thinking about a piece I read at Relevant magazine online "Are You Called To Create" an interview with author Erwin McManus, "The Artisan Soul"This simple quote excited me out of my skin: STOP LIVING YOUR LESSER STORY.Wherever you are in your life..career, relationships use that as a platform to build a better life. I understand this and I feel it deeply in my heart. Since I began paying attention to the Season of Lent I always felt the strong connection of creativity and spirituality. I am more my creative self now than ever before. I decided to tell myself, yes I am a…
  • My Lenten Journey: My Prickly Spirit

    8 Apr 2014 | 6:21 am
I've been prickly. As in every little thing said to me is irritating me. I am easily pissed off.  I am moody and distracted and worrisome. I am impatient. I am quick to anger and wrath. And I am constantly hungry.I am prickly. How do I know? Well, when I am directed about being still, I see it for what it is.  Silence and stillness is illuminating... I see where the weak spots are. I see why I am so prickly. The doubts are slipping in and my gaze has slipped away from God. There are moments when I think I must do the saving and the fixing. I lost sight of God having my back. And that…

What? Who's permission do I need? Exactly.  That is the answer. I don't need anyone's permission to create and live the life of my dreams. And yet... permission was sought...without even realizing I was seeking permission.  Permission seeking looks like fear.  Permission seeking looks like making everyone around you comfortable with your decision to move forward. Permission seeking looks…

No big deal.  No big whoop.I would pray each time a siren passed me by... dear God take care of the rescued and take care of the folks doing the rescuing, amen. Daniel José Older is an author who's navigated the publishing industry; as such, he knows what it's like to push up against an institutionally racist trade. In a powerful essay over at Buzzfeed, Older describes the contradiction--and the pain--of loving the craft of writing, yet having to deal with a publishing industry that not only assumes that people of color don't read, but that people of color also lack what it takes to be masterful writers.   In the essay, titled "Diversity Is Not Enough: Race, Power, Publishing," Older also problematizes the drive for diversity: We're right to push…

So technically it’s not a picture and some might call it a “sponsored” post, but I am not receiving anything for it and it is something I love.  I enjoy pausing and rewinding Disney movies to see if I can find all the “easter eggs” that are there.  Like Rapunzel in Frozen and the Hidden Mickey also in Frozen…did you see them both? This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of American Kennel Club for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine. I will be moving in to my own apartment soon.  This is the first time ever I have lived alone.  Like really ALONE.  No kids, no roommate, not even a pet.  Which got me thinking.  I want a pet. When my kids were little we got a kitten from the neighbor whose cat gave birth like clockwork every few months.  Because of his coloring we named him stone (because this is a sponsored post I am not allowed to include a picture but trust me he was cute).  But they really wanted a…

My medical insurance became effective April 1st.  It was the best April Fools I have every been involved with.  I made my first phone call to an allergist that comes highly recommended and am in search of a General Practitioner to get a physical and start working on the rest of my woes. My employer pays for 100% of my premium and insisted I get a PPO not an HMO and is in fact one of the most generous people I know.  But all of this would not have been able to happen if it were not for the…

Yesterday was April 1st.  April Fools Day.  I hate April Fools Day.  I am a scrooge, in that I don’t think it is funny to play practical jokes on anyone, tell them you are pregnant or quitting your job or moving to another state.  Ijust don’t get it. But what really isn’t funny is the email I received from my insurance broker. After news of Love and Hip Hop Atlanta star Mimi Faust’s sex tape hit the web, Steve Harvey took a few moments at the end of a recent show to admonish Faust, and give his female listeners a sermon on protecting their most precious gifts. During the closing of his nationally syndicated show, Harvey warned his young female listeners to be cautions about what they say and do on the Internet because it will be on the web forever. And he should know; many of Harvey’s flubs are floating around YouTube (like this one), as are rumors of his alleged infidelity. Had Harvey stopped at that…

Here are 10 things I learned along the way, that I wish someone had told me before we even started… 1. Be flexible about your dealbreakers. This sounds like an oxymoron right? Dealbreakers are, by definition, unflexible. But the thing I learned while househunting is that most people make a lofty list of “must haves” and “dealbreakers” for their future home, and then they actually start the househunting process,…

As a member of the influential “Gang of Four,” Paterson – along with former Mayor David Dinkins, late civil rights activist Percy Sutton, and Congressman Charles Rangel – helped to develop the economic and political capital of the city’s black community. WASHINGTON (AP) — As Bernard Hopkins snatched two championship belts displayed in front of Beibut Shumenov and moved them to his own spot on the dais, the light heavyweight from Kazakhstan sat expressionless, seemingly unmoved by the brashness of the ageless American. Confrontational showmanship is not unusual in boxing press conferences. But Thursday’s event, promoting a title unification bout, was a fascinating look at how the 49-year-old Hopkins tried to gain a psychological edge on the 30-year-old Shumenov. It’s an edge Hopkins hopes to exploit at the D.C. Armory on Saturday…

JACKSON, Miss. The university announced Thursday that the national office of Sigma Phi Epsilon, based in Richmond, Va., had closed its Ole Miss chapter. Besides the noose, someone draped a pre-2003 Georgia state flag with a Confederate battle emblem in its design on the face of the James Meredith statue in the pre-dawn hours of Feb. 16.

An opioid derivative similar to OxyContin but significantly more powerful, Zohydro was approved by the FDA…

WASHINGTON (AP) — The 2012 election should have been a good one for Democrats running for Congress in North Carolina. They received a total of 2.2 million votes — about 81,000 more than their Republican opponents. But when those votes were divvied up among the state’s 13 House districts, Democrats came up short. Way short. Republicans won nine seats and Democrats only four. How did Republicans pull off this unlikely feat? State lawmakers set the stage when they redrew the boundaries of congressional districts following the 2010 Census. Before redistricting, North Carolina’s…
