If you are a young Negro in America I can't imagine a better place for you to be than in a library at an Ivy League school. If you are the parent of such a young Negro it must make you proud to have a child in such a position, and you must sleep pretty well at night knowing that your child will be safe and protected in the friendly confines of a very white, very elite, academic environment. So imagine how shocked Charles Blow was to hear that his child almost got the Trayvon Martin treatment while walking out of the library on Yale's campus."As a noted memoirist and New York Times…

This was before he was called to duty in Iraq and did a couple of tours during the height of that brutal campaign. When Joseph came home from Iraq we all saw that he had changed. Jonathan Chait wrote this laughably unreflective and dim series of sentences in New York magazine:Political correctness is a style of politics in which the more radical members of the left attempt to regulate political discourse by defining opposing views as bigoted and illegitimate. Two decades ago, the only communities where the left could exert such hegemonic control lay within academia, which gave it an influence on intellectual life far out of proportion to its numeric size. Today’s political correctness flourishes most consequentially on social media, where it enjoys a frisson of…

The popularity of American Sniper, the new biopic about Chris Kyle's life as one of the most deadly men in the history of the United States military, is disturbing. As I wrote here, American Sniper is war porn propaganda, and a type of public masturbation with Right-wing ejaculate composed of militarism, cruelty, history and current events bereft of context, and embracing worshipfulness towards a sociopathic killer. The popularity of American Sniper is also an indictment of America's conscience and ethics. 9-11 caused a type of derangement for the American people en masse. The…

The historical magnitude of this recording would be tantamount to finding albums worth of material from Notorious BIG and Tupac discovered in 2043, from lost recordings from 1993. Well, you get the idea. Here you have two of the most visionary, complicated and misunderstood artists of their time, who constantly battled to make the music they heard in their head into reality. This lost live recording of Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane from Carnegie Hall in 1957 captures two giants at the crossroads. Found by an archivist Larry Applebaum this benefit gig at Carnegie Hall taped by the Voice Of…

And those that have stepped to me with some fantasy of happily-ever-after without any spiritual, emotional work done on themselves can just keep on moving.I am excited and calm about the road ahead. • At Loretta Lynch's Confirmation Hearing, Senators Air Holder Grievances

    Julianne Hing
    28 Jan 2015 | 2:09 pm
Outgoing Attorney General Eric Holder has rattled plenty of senators. On Wednesday, Loretta Lynch, President Obama's nominee to replace him, sat before the Senate Judiciary Committee for an hours-long confirmation hearing full of the usual political posturing from both parties. It also functioned as an airing of the ill will Republican members of Congress have toward Holder. Lynch, a U.S. attorney for Brooklyn, has sought to distance herself from Holder and she continued in that vein on Wednesday. She unflappably portrayed herself as a disciplined public servant with much less interest in the…

Rapper J. Cole already paid homage to his childhood home in Fayetteville, N.C., by naming his latest album, "2014 Forest Hills Drive," after it. But the rapper's family later lost the home to foreclosure. After earning fame and fortune as an artist, Cole eventually purchased the home, and during an interview this week he revealed that he plans to house single mothers rent-free in it. "My goal is to have that be a haven for families," he said during an interview with "The Combat Jack Show." "Every two years, a new family will come in; they live rent-free." You can listen to J. • Marissa Alexander Released; Now on House Arrest

    28 Jan 2015 | 8:19 am
After serving three years in jail, 34-year-old Marissa Alexander went home yesterday and is now on house arrest. A judge denied the prosecutor's request for an additional two-year sentence in the case of the Florida mother who in 2010, and nine days after giving birth, fired a gun near her abusive husband and allegedly his children. Alexander subsequently used Florida's "stand your ground" law as her defense. No one was injured but a jury, MSNBC reports, convicted her in 12 minutes. Alexander was initially sentenced to Florida's minimum, 20 years, and could've faced 60 years in prison. The…

Residents in Denver are protesting the police killing of 17-year-old Jessie Hernandez, who was killed Monday after a confrontation with police. BuzzFeed's Adolfo Flores breaks down what happened: Jessica "Jessie" Hernandez was killed Monday in a confrontation with police who were responding to a report of a suspicious vehicle. Two officers approached the car on foot after they determined it was reported stolen, the Denver Police Department said in a statement. Authorities said Hernandez drove the car, which had four other teens inside it, into one of the officers and struck him on the leg.

    28 Jan 2015 | 7:17 am
Marshawn Lynch is a man of few words. In the week leading up to the Super Bowl, the star running back for the Seattle Seahawks is making more news for his hostility toward the NFL press corps than for what he's put on the record. His refusal to play ball with sports media (and a few epic crotch-grabs) has earned him $120,000 in fines and a stern warning from the league's headquarters. But it's also made him one of the most enigmatic players in the NFL. Lynch has made his share of missteps: he's been arrested for driving with a concealed gun and for driving under the influence. Because he…

That’s when the referees make a bad or questionable call on one team and then make it up to that team by making a bad call the other way. No referee will admit this happens, but we all know that it does. I think that’s what happened with Selma getting a besat picture nomination. – See more at: http://www.africanamericanreports.com/2015/01/was-selmas-best-picture-nomination-make.html

    5 Jan 2015 | 5:00 pm
Hair relaxer is the #1 selling product in the black community. A whole lot of black women had a beef with Chris Rock when he produced “Good Hair” and shed a light on black hair care dollars and sense. How is it possible that you can fail 10 drud tests before being sent to jail. Stevie J was originally jailed for failing to pay $1 million in child support for a 17-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl, who live in Pennsylvania with their mother. Stevie J was ordered by a judge to enter a 30-day rehab program for an alleged addiction to cocaine after he failed multiple drug tests. The reality star was released from jail back in July on the condition that he submits to random drug testing. My guess is that he will have no problem failing ten more random drug tests, because if Stevie J is a life…
