Re-Shoring: Fact or Fable? - by Jerry JasinowskiThe consulting firm of A. T. The report says from 2009 through 2013, U.S. manufacturing output grew at an annual rate of nearly 6 percent but that U.S. imports of manufactured goods from China and other Asian nations grew even faster at an 8 percent pace. • Ancient Egyptian Symbolism In Black American Music

    achali
    13 Dec 2014 | 2:44 pm
IntroductionThe aim here is to trace the origins of the use of ancient Egyptian iconography in black American music. It can be found as far back as the 1950s with artists such as Sun Ra, continuing with Alice Coltrane in the 1960s, through to Earth Wind and Fire, X Clan, KRS One, Erykah Badu, and a host of others in-between and after. While Western composers such as Mozart and Verdi had made reference to ancient Egypt in their work (The Magic Flute & Aida), a unique set of historical circumstances led to black American artists doing the same. Thus I wish to draw attention to artists whose use…

1This is not an attempt to appeal to the sensibilities of yesteryear, a clarion-call for the new Charlie Parker, the new Al Green, or even the new Nas. Outside of a few universal concepts embodied by each of those artists (namely, a kind of modernist inventiveness useful in all ages, an insistence on the power of love, a dedication to an honest assessment of human struggle, in that order), none of them have anything uniquely contemporary to say to the listener today. Hip-hop itself has begun to compromise its own relevance by growing ironic in relation to its most noteworthy period (i.e., the…

"Whatever is 'lost' by the abandonment of aestheticism would be more than regained in the wider pursuit of cultural liberation." -- Clyde Taylor(1)What Jacob Carruthers designates as African deep thought(2) is generated, stabilized, and inscribed in ways that reveal its power, but also its cunning. Its character, its feelings, the expressions of it, often defy the normative bounds of languages which were not created to comprehend its essence--and often it is these very languages which limit the potency of this tradition. Such is the dilemma of the writing and conceptualizing of Africa via the…

I doubt this is the case though, simply because of all my travels abroad, I can't say that I've ever had such a deep connection to a regional food in this way. One of my favorite books is Martin Luther King, Jr.'s 'Strength To Love" I reread every so often trying to understand where all that love comes from. I wonder if I have that kind of strength? I wonder if I could love without judgement, in the face of great adversity and hatred? I don't know if I can get to that level. I do know I was shocked and stunned to love my children as each one arrived needing me.I was always so guarded until they arrived. They opened my heart and in came warmth and joy, and real happiness. Unimaginable feelings that I always thought would never be for me. Sure I loved…

I used to think peace was the absence of noise... That peace required absolute silence. I would go to great pains to have quiet in order to have peace. I have come to realize that peace isn't something that I can stage and then summon like a circus act. True peace is the inner stillness from within me. It is tapping that wellspring of quiet that already exists that I can step into regardless of what the noise of the world is. I don't have to run away to the quiet, all I gotta do is be the quiet and God meets me there always. Glad to see me.This is why I can no longer tolerate bullshit from…

Otherwise I would be racing to my destination....racing to my death possibly. As I thought about this I begin to smile and think to myself, yeah, I can absolutely see that. Therein lies the joy... being open to Angels saving my life. I am noticing the angels handiwork in just about everything I…

The death of two New York City police officers is tragic. They were two men of color who likely experienced the realities of a racist society, and were unjustifiably slain. Ismaaiyl Brinsley murdered Asian American and Hispanic American officers Wenjan Lu and Rafael Ramos by shooting them at point blank range while they sat in their police vehicle on Saturday, then he took his own life. Before killing the cops, Brinsley had shot his ex- girlfriend, 29-year old Shaneka Nicole Thompson, in Baltimore leaving her wounded, but alive.

  • Study: Black LGBT People More Likely to Live in States Without Anti-Discrimination Job Protection

    Julianne Hing
    18 Dec 2014 | 1:00 pm
Black LGBT people in the U.S. are more likely to live in states that don't prohibit employment discrimination on the basis of their sexual orientation, according to a new report (PDF) from the Williams Institute, a think tank at UCLA School of Law. That difference puts some 890,000 black LGBT people at risk of being discriminated against with no legal protection, researchers found. Those findings come from a new report that examines the disparities in life experiences for LGBT people who live in states that don't prohibit employment discrimination on the basis of a person's sexual…

Banks held her own in the debate, calling Azalea a modern day minstrel. But it appears she also has an ally in hacker group Anonymous, who has now threatened to expose the Australian born rapper if she doesn’t apologize to…
