If he were still with us, today Michael Jackson would be 56. He’s still so loved and so deeply missed, and still so ubiquitous in pop culture. This summer, Love Never Felt So Good was part of the barbecue playlist and in regular rotation in TV commercials. MJ is still with us. Today’s “um, what?” comes to you from the New York Times, an institution that is always 10 years behind cultural trends: The rear is fast becoming the erogenous zone of choice in America, vying for eminence with breasts, abs, legs or, for those of us who came of age in the early ’90s, Linda Hamilton’s sinewy arms in Terminator 2. Captivating back-end views of amply endowed personalities have stirred the popular imagination, prompting many women, it would seem, to chase after gawk-worthy curves of their own. Maybe the New York Times IS trolling Black Twitter. From NYT’s TV critic Alessandra Stanley, taking a look at the Shondaverse’s newest drama, How to Get Away with Murder: [Rhimes's] heroines are not at all like the bossy, sassy, salt-of-the-earth working-class women who have been scolding and uh-uh-ing on screen ever since Esther Rolle played Florida, the maid on Maude. They certainly are not as benign and reassuring as Clair Huxtable, the serene, elegant wife, mother and dedicated lawyer on The Cosby Show. In 2008, commentators as different as the comedian Bill Cosby and the…

As I watch the NFL’s player punishment apparatus spinning ever faster as it hands out random punishments to players who have perpetrated domestic violence and child abuse, I think of what Rodimus Prime of The Black Guy Who Tips podcast has said about the situation: it’s a witch hunt. There’s a lot about the NFL’s current troubles that doesn’t remind me of those witch hunts.  But I was surprised to find the comparison apt in some crucial respects. Witch trials in countries with strong central governments, such as France and England, tended to be slow and…

So there I was, doing some midday grocery shopping in an upscale suburban grocery store. I was about to check out at one of the self-checkout lanes, so I plopped my overflowing basket down and pulled out my frequent shopper rewards card. When self-checkout lanes were first introduced, I found them to be quite curious. I worried that they were harbingers of the HAL 9000-ish society that I still feel we’re tumbling toward. I thought about people losing their jobs and paychecks to automation and technology. And I pondered the crime factor. I’m not exactly a career criminal, but I did have a…

There is a particular type of hurt when outsiders attack the "homeland".On the morning of September 11, 2001, many Americans stood with mouths agape, wondering "how could they do this to us?" Others shook their heads, asking, "why do they hate us so much?" • Weekend Read: Misty Copeland, An Unlikely Ballerina

    Carla Murphy
    19 Sep 2014 | 2:36 pm
Settle in this weekend and meet artist, athlete and ballerina Misty Copeland in this gorgeous New Yorker profile by Rivka Galchen.  Copeland's artistic and commercial successes make us all feel good--about ballet, about America--and yet that feeling is somewhat tendentious. It is impossible to distill the current role of race in ballet (or in any field) from one woman's career. Copeland's race makes her immediately distinctive in the ballet world, and this has undoubtedly helped her commercial career, but murmurings, on some online dance-discussion threads, that she has been excessively…

Alessandra Stanley, the television critic for the New York Times, is standing by her profile of Shonda Rhimes even though it's been soundly (and fairly) criticized for its racism. The profile was published online Thursday and will be in the paper's Sunday print edition. The article's lede is this: "When Shonda Rhimes writes her autobiography, it should be called "How to Get Away With Being an Angry Black Woman." And it gets much, much worse. Talking Points Memo's Tom Kludt reached out to Stanley for a comment on the piece, and it looks like she's sticking by it. "The whole point of the…

Imagine getting a letter in the mail one day, announcing that a portion of your student loans has been cancelled forever. If you don't toss that letter in the junk mail pile, you might find out it's true. That's what happened in Michigan this year to a 32-year-old mother of four and a 24-year-old dental student. On the third anniversary of Occupy Wall Street, one offshoot of the Zuccotti Park encampment is making good on its mission to buy debt--only to cancel it. A group of activists called Rolling Jubilee is going after student loans, which at more than $1 trillion now account for 10…

For years double zeros and size twos dominated the most anticipated and coveted fashion illustration known as fashion week. Normally designers would take a year to release a plus-size version of their pieces, but U.K. brand Evans challenged that notion. The brand, which has more than 300 stores across the U.K. and Ireland, specializes in providing women with clothing that will celebrate every inch of their curves. They did just that during the plus-size runway show. Evans premiered its Design Collective, a group of six high-end designer collaborations available specifically for curvy women.

  • “My Inspiration” – Angela “Missy” Billups

    Bob Marovich
    20 Sep 2014 | 8:02 am
“My Inspiration” Angela “Missy” Billups E’Mazin Entertainment/Missy B. Music (2014) Best known for her churchy traditional songs, Angela “Missy” Billups, accompanied by a background vocal group, delivers a contemporary worship song to express gratitude to God for graces bestowed. She drops a couple of lines of verse from “Total Praise” in the vamp, then concludes, “When I thought was going to lose my mind / God, you stepped in the nick of time.” The song is good and shows that Missy is exploring new territory for her singles, but I much prefer Missy’s traditional side.

Tammy Smith Instrument of Praise www.tammysmithgospel.com By Bob Marovich Instrument of Praise by Chicago’s Tammy Smith sandwiches slices of traditional singing between healthy helpings of contemporary gospel with a smooth jazz patina. Nowhere is this combination more apparent than on the two part “The Blood.” Smith begins by offering Andrae Crouch’s classic “The Blood Will Never Lose Its Power” in a traditional vein, consistent with the original, then switches to a modern interpretation on the second part. As a singer, Smith possesses a light soprano that becomes even more…

    Bob Marovich
    18 Sep 2014 | 8:36 am
By Bob Marovich, Editor-in-Chief Christian rapper Lecrae has done what, to my knowledge, no gospel artist has ever accomplished: hit number one on the Billboard 200 – the list of the biggest-selling albums of the day. This would be a noteworthy achievement at any time, but it is particularly striking today, when gospel music sales have been lukewarm, to say the least. It’s one thing to top the Billboard Top Gospel Albums chart, where you are competing with other similarly selling albums. It’s quite another when you are competing with uberpopular, well-marketed mainstream artists such…

Taylor sings the notes off the staff on this slow burner, which demonstrates the singer’s vibrant interplay with the live audience. She croons, shouts, and squalls to accompaniment that includes a warmly warbling B3 and drum crashes like lightning strikes. Taylor’s interpolation of Andrae Crouch’s “The Blood Will Never Lose It’s Power” is a preaching moment. The medley could…

Lots of Ugandan men have complained to MPs that the condoms are too short and do not fit their sexual organs. These smaller condoms can create pressure during use which could lead to unexpected bursting. One thing I've realized even since I was a kid is that I don't really like the same things as people my age.
