Nigger is the ugliest word in the English language. In writing about the Republican Party's white supremacist fueled hatred towards Barack Obama, I had no choice but to tell the truth: the White Right views Obama as a "nigger" and it would be much more efficient if they were honest and simply said as much publicly.Words have power. They also exact a cost. More than ten years ago, I vowed to never use that word unless I was quoting a piece of literature or said language was unavoidable. I now have to reinstate my vow and find my sobriety again.Richard Pryor is the greatest American comedian of…

A sharply divided House approved a Republican plan Wednesday to launch a campaign-season lawsuit against President Barack Obama, accusing him of exceeding the bounds of his constitutional authority. A great paradox of Obama’s America is that racism has been so thoroughly condemned that it only rarely receives public attention. To some extent, the election of a black president relaxed what remained of our national focus on race matters, it triggered a prolonged self-congratulation and a deceptive notion that we had reached an ending, […]

I posted an article Monday from Salon that was also featured in The Nation and various other left wing publications about civil rights groups selling out to major telecom corporations on the issue of "net neutrality". (Check out the comments after the article that is linked here.) In my article, I wrote about my admiration for David Honig, who happens to lead one of the organizations that has been accused of "selling out". I got a few nasty e-mails which accused me of selling out as well and having blinders when it comes to this subject because of my admiration for the…

I saw some great films over the weekend.I Origins was excellent. Although some reviewers say that the post-credits sequence hurts the film, I must disagree. I Origins is a smart, mature, science fiction film.I also saw A Most Wanted Man. This is a good movie, one that is elevated by the late Philip Seymour Hoffman's performance. He is so alive; and because he is so alive it was deemed that he must leave us early. A Most Wanted Man is a also a reminder that every character in a properly constructed dramatic work is there for a reason. If I were to say more than that, I would be…

    kamille
    28 Jul 2014 | 4:12 pm
As a fan of hip-hop, it's always bittersweet to see the art form in spaces it rarely goes. Sweet, because it tells us the art is still growing; bitter, because there’s a good chance that it’s not going to be perfect. But could searching for perfection blind us from more defining achievements?Directed by Tony Award-nominee, Kenny Leon ("A Raisin In the Sun," "Fences," "Stick Fly") and written by Todd Kriedler ("The Heroin Diaries"), “Holler If You Hear Me” held its Broadway open on June 19th, three days after what would’ve been the 43rd birthday of the artist who inspired the script…

“Dark copies of dying whiteness are no longer needed. New Black models claim the day.” -Vincent Harding, “Toward The Black University” (1970)The interesting thing about the now ubiquitous “HBCU crisis” narratives is the extent to which many of them misread the nature and source of the crisis. For it is not HBCUs themselves, but the very conceptions of university learning that inform our understanding of higher education that represent a “crisis.” Yet, what often flows from these commentaries are rationales for the continued relevance of HBCUs inasmuch as these institutions…

Architecture can be regarded as media. On the one hand it frames reality (seen through its windows, doors and thresholds reality is cropped, as in a photograph). On the other hand, architecture is a container of time. In this sense it has filmic qualities: it gathers a succession of moments, narratives, temporalities, which it superimposes, rewinds and finally produces. In a house, time accumulates, and can be accessed by the physical marks it leaves, or by memory. In this sense, making documentary photography of architecture can be redundant, as architecture itself is a medium that documents…

In such troubling times, which even our ancients had to address, it becomes necessary to reach back to established wisdom — to recall the Good Speech of our forebears — with focused intention, so that we might navigate the present with more certainty; fostering the future with the absolute best of ourselves through time. Hundreds of us, led by The Coalition of Concerned Students, were protesting ten things and we decided that the most important was the removal of Lee Atwater from the Board of Trustees of this historically Black university. Aarian Pope (now Aarian Punter) was the one who bought the Atwater issue to Black Nia F.O.R.C.E. in late February (Black Nia FORCE, the student org founded by Ras Baraka). This season of Defiance is starting off so much more intriguing than the first season. It still has the same issue of the storyline with Irisa isn’t gripping me as much as it should. At least not until the end of the episode. However the other character arcs are so good I’m completely invested. There’s enough interesting dynamics going on that my confusion with the Irisa/Devouring Mother storyline doesn’t bother me as much. Secondary Characters are the New Redshirts So it’s clear Irisa is going crazy. This whole “Devouring Mother” thing is still a mystery to me but…

Another solid episode of Dominion. This show is really starting to flesh out and I’m enjoying every minute of it. This episode should have been called “Sins of the Father” because a lot of the issues folks have in this episode seem to stem from daddy issues. Carl Beukes is up there with Anthony Head as my favorite character on this show. We don’t get to see him often but when we do, it’s memorable. First he shows up to this diner to meet William Whele and acts a complete fool. “They have pudding…I hope it’s not from a can.” 60 seconds…

    30 Jul 2014 | 1:16 pm
Major publicly-traded for-profit college corporations are profiting off veterans' post-9/11 G.I. Bill benefits--to the tune of $1.7 billion in the 2012-2013 year alone. What's more, seven of the top eight for-profit colleges receiving these funds are currently under state or federal investigation for deceptive and potentially illegal recruiting practices. The findings were released in a new report (PDF) out today from the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee, which is chaired by Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa). A black historian David W. Blight has discovered evidence that the first celebration of what came to be known as Memorial Day was conducted by former slaves. Over time that history was whitewashed to give others credit for the origins of Memorial Day. Oddly enough many of those those sources that credit others with the creation of Memorial Day mention the “Decoration Day” ceremony of the former slaves giving Blight’s claims same credence. – See more at: http://www.africanamericanreports.com/2014/05/did-former-slaves-start-what-is-now.html#sthash.jAsSVwzJ.dpuf

On the night before she was killed, Renisha McBride was drinking shots of vodka. The first defense witness, Dr. Werner Spitz, was asked how much McBride drank. He based his answer on a blood alcohol level of nearly .22 at the time of her death. “She would have had to consume somewhere between 10 and 11 of vodka,” said Spitz. However, he said her blood alcohol level at the time of the car crash — 3 and 1/2 hours earlier — would have been close to .3. How would a person that drunk behave? “Loss of judgment. They are, in a way, out of their normal mind,” said Spitz.

Then there’s the two girls standing against a wall, and they wait as two boys hold their chests down. One of them passes out on the ground, and then she finally wakes up after 30 scary seconds as her friends laugh.
