  • A Conversation with Historian David Krugler About African-American Resistance to White Violence During the Red Summer of 1919

    21 May 2015 | 8:35 pm
Historian David Krugler is the guest on this week's episode of The Chauncey DeVega Show.David is the author of the new book 1919, The Year of Racial Violence: How African Americans Fought Back.Dr. Krugler's work is an exciting intervention against a narrative of African-American passivity in the face of white racial pogroms and other violence in the post World War One era. Black America has used a range of means to resist white supremacy. "Non-violence" has come to dominate public memory about the Black Freedom Struggle. Great work such as David's is helping a broader public to…

This morning, Walmart, one of the world's biggest companies - and the nation's biggest food seller by a long shot - announced it has adopted the "five freedoms" principles for farm animals, effectively renouncing the use of extreme confinement and other abusive practices in animal agriculture, and signaling an extraordinary change in agriculture in America. Precisely because it's Walmart, this is the most definitive statement yet that the era of confining farm animals in cages will come to an end. We applaud the company for adopting a comprehensive animal welfare policy, which comes on the…

By Howard Schneider and Steve Holland WASHINGTON, May 22 (Reuters) - There were no fancy economic models or forecasts when former Florida Governor Jeb Bush first tossed out the idea that 4 percent annual growth should be the overarching goal for the U.S. economy. But what started as a casual suggestion during a 2010 conference call with advisers to the George W. Bush Institute, a public policy center in Dallas, has now become the central economic idea of Bush's developing run for the White House. Details of the call were recounted by one of the participants to Reuters. The goal is ambitious:…

When it comes to skin care products, it's important to know about any unwanted chemicals lurking in that ingredient label. But when it comes to sunscreen specifically, it turns out that we have to worry about what's not in the bottle, too.In preparation for the sunniest of seasons, Consumer Reports recently tested 34 different sunscreen products to see if the sun protection factor strength claimed on the label actually matched the SPF protection in the cream. Sadly, almost a third of the brands tested didn't hold up to their own standards, missing the mark by anywhere from 16 to a whopping 70…

"If you haven't heard Oliver and his boys you haven't heard real jazz. It is loud, wailing and pulsating. You dance calmly for a while, trying to fight it, and then you succumb completely, as King makes his trumpet talk personally to you – and the trumpet usually doesn't say nice things. Hip dancing is carried out wholesaledly between the customers. Native jazz has no conscience."- Variety (Review from the 1920s)King Oliver's story reads as if Shakespeare was dared to come back and write a jazz tragedy. There is the high note of ushering the New Orleans sound into Chicago. Plenty of lows,…

1This is not an attempt to appeal to the sensibilities of yesteryear, a clarion-call for the new Charlie Parker, the new Al Green, or even the new Nas. Outside of a few universal concepts embodied by each of those artists (namely, a kind of modernist inventiveness useful in all ages, an insistence on the power of love, a dedication to an honest assessment of human struggle, in that order), none of them have anything uniquely contemporary to say to the listener today. Hip-hop itself has begun to compromise its own relevance by growing ironic in relation to its most noteworthy period (i.e., the…
  • Ancient Egyptian Symbolism In Black American Music

    achali
    4 Apr 2015 | 10:00 pm
IntroductionThe aim here is to trace the origins of the use of ancient Egyptian iconography in black American music. It can be found as far back as the 1950s with artists such as Sun Ra, continuing with Alice Coltrane in the 1960s, through to Earth Wind and Fire, X Clan, KRS One, Erykah Badu, and a host of others in-between and after. While Western composers such as Mozart and Verdi had made reference to ancient Egypt in their work (The Magic Flute & Aida), a unique set of historical circumstances led to black American artists doing the same. Thus I wish to draw attention to artists whose use…

I never thought I wouldn't find love again. I never paid attention to all the talk around Black women and dating and finding marriageable Black men. I never had any qualms dating men from other ethnicity's. I have been open to love all along...sometimes to my detriment. As I look back I have always been open to love. What I haven't been was myself. What I have done was try to become something someone else wanted and needed with the hopes that some of what I wanted and needed would be met. I was WRONG! It was quite intense and direct and forceful, as though they didn't want me to miss out.But that is how God works. So I connect with this man and God only knows why lightening strikes. I notice right away he is every long held dream... Every spoken and unspoken desire. He possesses the keys…

It’s unclear whether the leaked track is final, but Drake previously revealed that his upcoming album, Views From the 6, would include something he recorded with Queen Bey. The duo previously…

The 1921 Tulsa Race Riot was the country's bloodiest civil disturbance of the century. Leaving perhaps 150 dead, 30 city blocks burned to the ground, and more than a thousand families homeless, the riot represented an unprecedented breakdown of the rule of law. It reduced the prosperous black community of Greenwood, Oklahoma, to rubble. In Reconstructing the Dreamland, Alfred Brophy draws on his own extensive research into contemporary accounts and court documents to chronicle this devastating riot, showing how and why the rule of law quickly eroded. Brophy offers a gut-wrenching portrait of…

Since the end of the American Civil War, African-slave descendants, or "African-Americans," have been struggling to gain so-called 'freedom'. Clearly, the history of "Black peoples" condition in America since the "Emancipation" has sustained an underlying perception that true freedom has still not been attained. In all of the efforts that have gone forth, from segregation, desegregation, assimilation, separation, "civil rights," marches, protests, and demands, what has, thus far, never been examined is the "legal status" of African slaves and their post-emancipation descendants, which over…

An exceptional resource, this comprehensive reader brings together primary and secondary documents related to efforts to redress historical wrongs against African Americans. These varied efforts are often grouped together under the rubric “reparations movement,” and they are united in their goal of “repairing” the injustices that have followed from the long history of slavery and Jim Crow. Yet, as this collection reveals, there is a broad range of opinions as to the form that repair might take. Some advocates of redress call for apologies; others for official acknowledgment of…
