The conversation around the toxicity of Twitter and the hordes of angry social justice warriors who will attack any one who doesn’t understand their secret lingo has become cartoonish. I see emails and posts through out social media warning of the impending doom when trying to be reasonable at the hands of #blacktwitter or another subgroup on the platform. In an attempt to shift the conversation I took to Twitter to attempt to give a different perspective. The following was my attempt at a deeper look into the supposed Twitter “mob” mentality. I have been watching the case of Tate Brown  here in Philly for awhile now. This case, unlike other cases of police brutality, did not make national headlines.I think I know why.I also did not jump into the fray, because, quite frankly, I did not see an Eric Garner, or even a Michael Brown type scenario playing itself out here. The truth is I represent a lot of people like Tate Brown. They are not angels or choir boys, and, if what is alleged is true, like Tate Brown, they make their living in the streets.    So when I heard about the shooting death of…

  • At the 2015 Oscars, Patricia Arquette Unintentionally Exposed White Feminism's Racist Blind Spot

Film is magical. As human beings, we are captivated by movies because of a particular quirk of our physiology wherein images moving at a certain speed create the illusion of motion on a screen. Movies are also an insight into our collective subconscious. Consequently, film channels a given society’s struggles and anxieties about power and questions of identity. Celebrations of film such as the Oscars are exercises in narcissism and self-congratulatory behavior for those people who are fortunate (or not, depending on one’s point of view) to work in Hollywood. The Oscars are also an…

How deep is the hole the oil industry is currently stuck inside? To figure that out, you only need to look as far back as last week, which saw another two trainloads full of oil derail and storage numbers that put U.S. crude stocks at record highsEvery new pipeline leak or train derailment puts the environmental risk of moving ever greater amounts of oil into even sharper relief. At the same time, storage tanks that are bursting at the seams say everything you need to know about the troubled economic returns currently plaguing the energy business.More...

One of our Angela Davis posts (and this post from The Atlantic about Minneapolis' White Lie which notes a key 2002 reneging of a celebrated 1970s liberal property tax policy) made me want to revisit this story from our first print release, called The Minnesota Slave Trade. It could easily be called the "neo-slavery trade" only not based on the prison industrial complex (as Kanye West and others before him have said), rather what might be called the social services industrial complex. Others have even referred to a non-profit industrial complex. If a key part of the struggle is determining how…

The historical magnitude of this recording would be tantamount to finding albums worth of material from Notorious BIG and Tupac discovered in 2043, from lost recordings from 1993. Well, you get the idea. Here you have two of the most visionary, complicated and misunderstood artists of their time, who constantly battled to make the music they heard in their head into reality. This lost live recording of Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane from Carnegie Hall in 1957 captures two giants at the crossroads. Found by an archivist Larry Applebaum this benefit gig at Carnegie Hall taped by the Voice Of…

  • My Lenten Journey 2015: I Need To Quit Trying To Do Lent

    22 Feb 2015 | 10:24 am
This year my commitment to Lent is difficult. I can't seem to find my spiritual rhythm. I didn't make it to Ash Wednesday service, which usually sets the tone for me. But then again, that's just an excuse. Perhaps I am too focused on trying to Do Lent, rather than experience Lent.I can feel myself getting worked up about missing out on Lent, when really all that is needed is quiet time...deliberate quiet and stillness. I can't seem to give myself that time of quiet. What is the truth here? What am I trying to escape from now?Lent is the time to look at the messy parts of your life, the parts…

It is so no secret that I love this time of Lent. This time of dealing with the internal stuff with God.Each season of Lent presents itself with is own purpose of focus for me. Over the seasons it has been the arts and creativity and personal development and spiritual growth and maturity. This season it's about meditation and the absorption of words in place of wine. I am giving up wine. I am giving up wine and replacing wine with words. Spiritual, sacred, illuminating, thoughtful, uplifting words. These next 40 days will be filled with letter writing, and written contemplation of where I am…

Things I do not want to keep patching up over and over again. This will not be a long meditation. It's more of a notice to myself to look at those places in my heart and soul that are in need of repair.  I need time away. I need internal time. I need stillness.I can feel the coming of great gifts and I want to be more prepared…

I got a rythm.I am seeing the realities of things and I am not running from what I see. I am also not interested in nursing anyone's malaise. I can't hold anybody up or down, I am quite clear about that. This year I have spent the weekend in Vegas with 2 of my sisters.  Just being sisters, just relaxing, just having fun. (full…

How is that helping?   So yes, it seems just before I had the injection I started developing fluid on the knee.  The injection seems to be working, in that, my ability to walk longer distances without dying is better and my generalized pain is lower.  But the fluid is making it unbearable at times to straighten my knee to it’s full potential, you know, like how straight it needs to be for things like, standing, walking, living.
